IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Marianne von Edmund
Canon: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Canon Point: Post game, Verdant Wind route
Age: 24
Background: Fire Emblem Wiki link

Arrival Scenario: Welcome to the Free Cities

Suitability: As much as Marianne is loathe to be swept up into a new and unfamiliar conflict so soon after the one in her canon has finally been resolved, she would nonetheless step up to the task. Despite recent improvements to her sense of self-worth she still desperately wants to be useful rather than dead weight, and that will drive her to seek out ways assist where she's most experienced: healing and animal handling. Working at a hospital in Cadens would be a good fit for her, especially given her experience as a magical war medic--although she'll have to prove that she's capable of dressing wounds and providing patient care beyond a healing spell before she'll be allowed to be of much help, most likely. Alternatively (or in addition), she would also happily care for horses at any stable located within the city. Marianne isn't likely to declare allegiance to any one nation anytime soon, not knowing the full nuance and context of the situation, but she'll quickly put her boots on the ground to help people (and animals) where she is.

There's also a lot of potential for Marianne to start coming into her own as a future leader of her homeland while she's in Abraxas. Several of her endings in Fire Emblem: Three Houses have her become either a wise and compassionate leader in her own right or a highly-prized advisor, and she has ample opportunity to do either or both in Abraxas. She already has people she knows in Cadens who will help her orient herself and gather her bearings, which will accelerate her working through the 'I have no idea what's going on' part of the new-arrival process. At least at first, she'll most closely follow her canonmate Claude, a man who she has already served under and who is notorious for sticking his nose into everything. In time, I'd love to see her blossom into her own person as she gains confidence and experience. The recent establishment of the Summoned Conclave will be a great start for her in that regard.

Relatedly, Marianne will be intensely curious about the other Summoned, especially once she learns how to reach out to those beyond the Free Cities. The way she sees it, she has more in common with them than she does the nation that's Summoned her, and she will want to learn both their thoughts on this world's conflict as well as the worlds they come from. Fódlan is very, very culturally isolated, so hearing about how things are beyond her limited world view will be eye-opening and exciting for her, especially as Fódlan is beginning to reform itself to become a better, more welcoming place. Again, participation in the Summoned Conclave will provide opportunities for her to pursue this avenue of inquiry, as will exposure to the Horizon.

As someone who has come from a medieval-adjacent setting, the New Magic common in the Free Cities will perplex Marianne quite a bit, as will the nation's general disdain for the other forms of magic that are more similar to how her own magic from Fódlan works. She's likely to engage New Magic users with questions of curiosity and interest, although she won't pick up the art for herself. Instead, Marianne will focus her attention on either Academic Magic (as she is used to studying spells and improving her magical skills through practice, since that's how magic is improved in the game) or High Magic (as she is a religious person and willing to accept that there may be gods she can pray to who watch over Abraxas like the Goddess she knows watches over Fódlan). Which she chooses depends on when and how she is exposed to each, but regardless of her school of magical focus she will engage in it wholeheartedly. She's a mage, and the use of magic appeals to and feels comfortable for her.

Powers: Marianne will be arriving in Abraxas as a Holy Knight who also has training in the Monk (Beginner), Priest (Intermediate) and Bishop (Advanced) classes. She is a very powerful user of Faith magic (a type of magic that is usually, but not exclusively, used to heal allies) and knows the following spells:

- Heal: heals an ally adjacent to her
- Nosferatu: drains life from an enemy in order to heal herself
- Physic: heals an ally at a distance
- Silence: prevents an enemy from using magic for a brief period
- Aura: damages enemies with rings of light

Of these spells, Silence is the most potentially game-breaking given how prominent magic and the use of it are in this world. As a result, I plan to completely ignore it and not use it in Abraxas at all if Marianne is accepted.

In addition to Faith magic, Marianne also knows a couple of Reason magic (i.e., elemental-based magic) spells:

- Blizzard: does ice-based damage to an enemy
- Thoron: does lightning-based damage to an enemy

In Fire Emblem: Three Houses game mechanics terms, she has C-rank profiency with these and will therefore use these spells infrequently.

And, finally, she a couple of unique abilities unrelated to her study of magic:

- Crest of the Beast/Crest of Maurice: provides a chance that Marianne's attacks will be more damaging than they would otherwise be
- Animal Friend: if Marianne is adjacent to a unit with an animal (i.e., flying mount or cavalry), she heals a little at the beginning of her turn.

If Marianne is accepted, I don't plan on doing much with either of these abilities. At most, Marianne might get a lucky shot if she's ever gets into fisticuffs with anyone. As far as the Animal Friend ability, it would be somewhat silly for her to heal injuries just by standing next to a horse. I'll play it more like 'her mood improves because she loves animals,' which really isn't so much a power as it is a personality trait.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Marianne has recently conquered the "curse" that has plagued her family line for generations.

Crests are a magical entity that are passed through bloodlines in Fódlan. In most cases, having a Crest is desirable and necessary for the weilding of power. By contrast, Marianne carries the Crest of Maurice, also known as the Crest of the Beast, which marks her bloodlined as cursed. As a result, Marianne spends much of the early part of Fire Emblem: Three Houses truly believing that she can only bring misfortune to those around her.

After Marianne is accused of being the monster that stalks the forests of her home territory and killing its citizens, the rest of the Golden Deer--led by Byleth, their professor--rally around her and head into the forest to investigate. There they find Marianne's ancestor Maurice, who has lost his sanity and taken a monstrous form. They fight and defeat him, finally providing him clarity and peace--and, just as importantly, clearing Marianne's name and opening the possibility of moving past the dark rumors that have swirled around her for years.

This event is a turning point for Marianne's character development through the game, as it allows Marianne to (rather literally) face her demons and to finally start to accept who she is and what she can become. After defeating Maurice, she's able to talk about her Crest, her family history, and herself with far less reticence than she once did. She forsees a future for herself for what is perhaps the first time in her life, even if she doesn't quite know what form that future will take. And most importantly, it allows her to make peace with her flaws and her history, finally able to begin loving herself and resolving to improve for her own reasons.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

Marianne is a devout follower of the Church of Seiros, focusing especially on its tenets of servitude, submission, obedience, and piety. By her own admission, she has used her religion as a crutch to prevent her from having to face her own shortcomings or to make difficult decisions, instead allowing what the faithful say to guide her path. That said, the Church's role in her life is evolving. While she will never give up her belief in it, as she becomes more confident in her own capabilities and instincts her religiousness is starting to shift more into an internalized moral code (help others, be compassionate, be an honest and capable person, etc.) rather than an external force that she follows blindly. As such, the 'submission and obedience' aspects are becoming less and less important to her over time.

Based on her own experiences, she also feels a fondness and obligation to stick by other outcasts, whether they be individuals or groups. She would have never been accepted by anyone if people hadn't stuck by her, after all, and she wishes to carry the gift they've given her forward. Additionally, many of her endings in Three Houses indicate that she's become quite open-minded toward non-Fódlan peoples, building relationships with them and accepting them as easily as her own countrymen.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

Marianne admires qualities that she feels she lacks: confidence, charisma, and capability. Her character supports in Fire Emblem: Three Houses find her in awe of classmates with these qualities, or sincerely puzzled that they also seem to have struggles with themselves or their identities. For example, she wishes to be capable like Hilda or have a dream worth pursuing like Ashe, and she's sincerely surprised that someone like Claude relates to her situation given the high regard she's always held him in. She's also quick to recognize that her own growth wouldn't be possible without having such people in her life, and the gratitude she feels as a result is immeasurable.

Beyond her tendency to admire qualities her aspirational self would have, Marianne also values compassion toward other people as a part of her caring and religious nature, and especially toward animals because she cares for animals more than she does most people. If someone hates animals, then a positive relationship with Marianne is practically a non-starter.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Marianne greatly dislikes her gloomy, pessimistic demeanor, knowing that it's alienating and uncomfortable for other people. So much so, as a matter of fact, that she's trying to work on bettering that part of herself. She knows she will never have the easy charisma of Hilda or Claude, and she'll never be extroverted or boisterous in any way. However, she believes she can become more confident and approachable. It's a process, and not a linear one, but she's doing her best.

She also wishes she were more graceful and better at organizing herself and her things. As things are, she's a bit clumsy and absolutely hopeless when left with tidying things.

What is their sign, and why?

The Hanged Man.

Marianne has spent the entirety of her life as an outcast due to her bloodline and its ties to the Crest of the Beast. She also did herself no favors by hating herself for those very same reasons and withdrawing from other people as a result. She's started the journey of working through it and fully integrating with Fódlan society and politics, first with the Golden Deer and eventually with wherever she ends up after the war, but I really like the idea of her having The Hanged Man as a reminder that her past is still a part of her even as she's moving beyond it.
